Message from Gary Smith, Executive Director of LSNC to all LSNC staff

Hello Everyone,

It is with great sorrow that I report the death of our friend and colleague, Jack Daniel, who spent his legal services and civil rights career battling poverty and injustice. Jack, who served as keynote speaker at a LSNC All Staff Conference some years ago, inspired all of us, not only with his dedication to his clients, but with the spirit and good humor with which he battled terminal cancer for many years. He was a true "warrior on poverty," and a wonderful human being. We will miss him.

Gary

  1. All,

To add to Gary's tribute - what a loss. Jack collaborated with us extensively on the Race Equity Project and was, at the time of his passing, making impressive headway on a similar effort at his own program, Central California Legal Services. I feel fortunate to have spent time with him in November at the NLADA annual conference during which he was a presenter and critical participant in the day long race equity pre-conference workshop. Jack was also the primary co-author of the Language Access and the Courts in CA publication our two programs published in 2006. Jack's insight and advice was invaluable to me and many others particularly on issues on constitutional law, language access rights, civil rights and youth and education rights issues. Jack was a community lawyer to his core, approaching his practice with equal parts dead seriousness and dark and self-deprecating sense of humor and always, always putting the client first. It is the way of practice I aspire to.
